Function of engine oil
Motor oil performs a variety of tasks in a vehicle engine and is therefore indispensable. The main function of the oil is to lubricate the moving parts of the engine, which would otherwise wear out quickly due to friction. By covering the affected parts like a film, friction is reduced and damage within the engine is prevented. In addition, engine oil cools areas that get warm when the car is running but cannot be reached by the coolant - such as the pistons and crankshaft. Other tasks of engine oil are the transmission of hydraulic forces, the sealing of the combustion chamber and crankcase, for example, and the cleaning of the engine by removing old oil and combustion residues.
Which engine oil is the right one?
Under no circumstances should you use any engine oil for your own car - which oil is suitable depends on the individual oil filter system, the structure of the engine and the metallurgy of a vehicle and is carefully checked and specified by the vehicle manufacturer. The SAE viscosity class as well as the API classification and the ACEA specification are particularly important. They provide information about the flow properties and performance of an oil. Before buying oil, the manufacturer's instructions should be observed, as using the wrong engine oil can damage the engine.
Mixing engine oil - is that possible?
In principle, different engine oils can only be mixed if they are suitable products for the same engine concept. Oils for petrol and diesel engines should therefore never be mixed, nor should oils from the four-stroke and two-stroke ranges be mixed. Nevertheless, care should always be taken to only use engine oil whose quality meets the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer.
